How much damage can malware really do?
Through a live demonstration, you will understand how much damage cyber attacks can cause and if cyber threats are capable of bringing down a whole power plant.
What’s in it for me as a university student?
A cyber attack will be designed to infiltrate a power plant model to cause a blackout. This will demonstrate the significance of cyber attacks in a real-life physical scenario.
The demonstration showcases how to bring down a power plant using common attacks to exploit vulnerabilities, as well as common mistakes made by unaware employees.
The demonstration will be followed by a debrief on the vulnerabilities exploited, and what could have been done to prevent the incident.
How does it look?
A scale model of a town powered by a power plant will be used to demonstrate how a cyber attack could result in a total blackout. From a simple phishing email, you will see how an attacker can gain access to an engineering workstation used to control the power plant. This access would then be used to shut down the valves managing the flow of water to the turbines thereby causing a power outage.
